For those who know me ,today's musical post will come with no surprise. In fact the surprise is that it took me so long to mention my "inner tormentors". I composed "the agony column" with a full determination to be impartial in musical genres and give credit ,where credit is due,to the few outstanding musical treats that we are rarely bestowed by today's music industry. Yet this determination has been shattered within seconds by a single remembrance of that deep voice and those mesmerizing rhythms. In short: Rammstein.
Whether I show it or not, my ears know no greater pleasure than the musical brilliance of this German band. Brutality, sensibility, passion, decadence, madness, sadness, intensity, sexuality, love, sensuality .... are far too simple words to capture the brilliance hidden in the lyrics that are completed by pure instrumental delight. To me they capture everything I search in music: intelligence, purpose and my inner response. How could I pick just a song that would do them justice? But pick I must..
In hope that this madwoman's ravings did not cause you any psychical harm, I invite you to discover and dissect them yourself. In help for those who do not know German : www.herzelied.com offers us the English translation of the lyrics.
And such I end my post, in wonderful exhaustion, and wish you as usual a tolerable day. Your humble servant, little obsessed myself.
As you may have noticed, I did not encounter any musical "jewel" that would compel me to share. But I thought that I should least give you something to "chew". I have selected thus a "fugitive" poem by dear old Keats and my own little work as a photo manipulator.
What first got my attention in this song is the manner of the lady's singing. Unlike the majority of today's so-called artist, Bebe manages to deliver in a simple singing style a electrical discharge of emotions. But there are so many songs out there that give the illusion of melodic art that I felt it necessary to "dig" deeper.
Lyrics analysis: I must confess that since I have little knowledge of the Spanish language I fell into believing that the song is dedicated to a lost love. Since I am always curious on what lies within foreign songs, I asked my dear friend Google for the translation. I was not far from the truth. It is about a loss and it does involve love, but of a maternal nature. The poor girl was beaten by her (fill in the blanks with a swear word of choice) husband while she was pregnant and subsequently lost the child. The song is probably her way of searching for inner peace. I can only imagine what she went through and how hard it must gave been to release the song to the public. I thought it just to spread her message with my full respect.
Video analysis: I could not conclude without a short look at the visual motives. The director certainly got the message of the song and set it in womb-like-background. The artist sinking repeatedly in water, her fetus positions, the burst of "liquid" in water scene as a metaphor for the miscarriage, all in perfect alignment with the lyrics are pure genius.
To conclude I give you the link to the Spanish and translated lyrics and invite you to reflect on them yourself: Hope you have at least a tolerable day, yours truly.
"Sherlock Holmes often read the "agony column", calling it "always instructive". [1] However, in that context, the "agony column" was a personals advertisements column, not an agony aunt's column. [2]"
that is the sense of this blog. I advertise personally on whatever I want. Probably it will only consist on my own work as a photographer ( nothing new here) and maybe on some books or songs..
